I was born and grew up in South Hadley, Massachusetts. I graduated from Oberlin College in 1968 and earned my Ph. D. in Politics from Brandeis University in 1976. During 1974-75, I served as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Special Commission on Unequal Educational Opportunity, and during 1975-76, I was a visiting Assistant Professor at Oberlin College. Since 1976, I have been a professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. During that time, I have also been a visiting scholar at the University of Kent in Canterbury and the University of Nottingham, both in the UK.
I am married to Mary Lou Hatcher and have four precious adult children: Becky, Alex, Tim, and Lily --and one grandson, Oliver.
